Maiden Tower

Baku's Maiden Tower is an ancient, legendary place, UNESCO site, and the heart of the Old Town. Built in the 12th century, it's the most ancient monument of the capital and one of the most iconic in the country, thus featured in local currency. Its myths and mysteries form an important part of Azerbaijan's culture and national heritage, as far as being the scenario for ballets and theatre's plays. It also it offers one the most stunning views of the city from its rooftop - the best place to take panoramic pictures of the town.

Constructed on foundations that date back to the 4th century, on a site previously used as a Zoroastrian fire temple, it is thought that it was originally used as an astronomical observatory - but the expert's theories about its history keep piling on.

The name's origins are unclear, but legends say that it comes from a tragedy of ancient times. Once upon a time, the city's king forced his daughter to marry a man she didn't love. Desperate, she asked her father to build a tower for her. Thinking it could offer her some comfort, the king obliged. But as soon as the last brick was put in its place, the princess climbed the tower and jumped into the black sea below, which, at the time, still crashed into the city's walls.

We'll never now if it's a matter of history or myths, but we invite you to visit the tower, and discover the stories.
