Presentation:
The Azerbaijan Carpet Museum has been created in 1967. It displays Azerbaijani carpets and others masterpieces weaving made. It has the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpet in the world. Since 2014, the museum is located on the seafront of Baku, in a building which has the shape of a Carpet, but it used to be located in the Juma Mosque in Icharishahar. Plans to move the collection to a new purpose-built venue have been in the works since 2010 when Azerbaijani carpets were proclaimed "a Masterpiece of Intangible Heritage" by UNESCO.
In the museum, carpets and carpet items such as clothes, bags, canvas…of diverse centuries are displayed. The Azerbaijani Carpets were born in the 13rd century and have known many uses: insulation, decoration, horses’ harness…The visit makes you discover all of them and indulge you in the culture of the Land of Fire. Strolling around the museum is also a chance to watch people weaving in real-time.
Impressions:
I think the Azerbaijan Carpet Museum is a must-see in Baku. The two floors make you travel through time and Azerbaidjani customs. It also allows you to learn more about the culture of the Land of Fire and the importance of weaving thanks to the audioguides which are available in many languages.
The outside architecture of the building is impressive, and once you enter it, only the wall of carpets makes you remember the roll shape. These carpets show their sometimes bright-colors, sometimes washed-out colors all along the wall and make you enjoy a wonderful show!
PS: Pay attention to the masterpieces during your visit, some carpets could be held for paintings!
